The Text, Transmission, and Cultural Exchange research group has been funded as part of the Texts, Contexts, Cultures research programme of the Moore Institute in the National University of Ireland, Galway. It has been supported by the Higher Education Authority under the Programme for Research in Third-Level Institutions, and by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The aim of this research is to illuminate the impact of travel writing and images on the transmission and exchange of culture within Europe and between Europe, Asia and the Americas from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries.

In addition to editions of historical and literary material, two online databases linked to the central theme of travel have been developed. Each is the result of extensive collaboration between researchers in the Moore Institute, digital humanities specialists and librarians. They have led to the creation of detailed metadata about networks of persons and places, books and manuscripts, which are part of the world of travel literature and the movement of ideas. Both will continue to be developed, as resources allow.
