At Addair a small village 6 miles farther on the road to Killarney are the remains of 3 abbeys & of an old castle once inhabited by the Earls of Desmond. The [situation] of these near the River Maig & the trees around them give them a picturesque appearance but they have nothing venerable or grand in themselves - neither indeed is any abbey in Ireland to be mention’d with most of those in England which are so justly the object of curiosity.
