Biographical Notes | English travel writer. Being from a wealthy family, he could travel all over Europe: France (where he met Voltaire), Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, and Bohemia. He wrote travel accounts about Spain and Portugal, and later about Ireland - this last caused a considerable scandal. He visited France again in 1792-93. Member of the Royal Society from 1774, but withdrew from it in 1794. |
