View of London Derry on the River Foyle in the North of Ireland

View of the city of Derry across the River Foyle. The city extends up the side of a hill above the water, and is connected to the mainland by a bridge on the right. Among the prominent features of the city are its walls, a domed castellated tower, the large four-square Corporation building and the church steeple at the top of the hill. There are several ships and boats on the river, and, beyond the city, houses line part of the river bank. Behind them fields are laid out on rising ground. On the right, the land descends steeply to the water. A wall running along the bottom of the image delimits the artist's viewpoint and frames the scene.

August 8th, left Derry, and took the road by Raphoe, to the Rev. Mr. Golding's at Clonleigh, who favoured me with much valuable information. The view of Derry, at the distance of a mile or two, is the most picturesque of any place I have seen; it seems to be built on an island of bold land rising from the river, which spreads into a fine bason at the foot of the town; the adjacent country hilly, the scene wants nothing but wood to make it a perfect landscape.
