Bird's-eye pictorial plan of the starfort at Castle Park, later Jamesfort, now known as Old-fort, near Kinsale. Situated on a promontory between the Bandon River and the sea, it is composed of two towers and adjacent buildings within walls forming a citadel, surrounded by outer pentagonal embastioned walls and a ditch. In the foreground, two fragments of printed plate pasted upon the drawing represent a troop of lancers and a ship, both with touches of red colour. A simple compass rose gives the cardinal points.<br><br>This image is copied from Sir Thomas Stafford’s <em>Pacata Hibernia</em> (1633). The castle was constructed c. 1602-1604 to defend the haven of Kinsale. | Castle ny Parke invested by the Spanyards when they took Kinsale was rendered by them to Queen Elizab<sup>th</sup> 10 Nov<sup>r</sup> 1601 upon promise of their Lives onely. <br>Here very observable was a brave act of a private souldier for whilst the Lord Deputy Mountjoy and the serjeant major were viewing the grounds a musqueteer belonging to S<sup>r</sup> Francis Berkleys company, in the face of the guards attempting to steal (as he had done divers times before) a Spanish Sentinel, who was seconded with 4 that he saw not, fought them all five, whereof one of them was a sergeant major, whom he had almost taken prisoner, & when he had found he could do noe good upon them all, he came off without other hurt, than y<sup>e</sup> cutting of his hand a little with the breaking of a thrust. Nov<sup>r</sup> 23 1601. <br>This Castle ny Park was erected by the Queen Anno 1601 by her Ingineer Paul Ives for the defence of Kinsale Harbour, who also contrived Halabolin Fort. [p. 201] |
