View of Kilkenny Castle from a wide terrace overlooking the building. Only the upper part of the castle is shown. On the raised area several civilian figures are sketched, while nearby troops of soldiers and a horseman are represented on fragments of printed plate pasted upon the drawing. The terrace wall and tree-lined walk extend out beyond the oval frame which partially surrounds the image. Below the frame is a view of Kilkenny rooftops. Touches of red have been added to the houses, soldiers and onlookers.

Kilkenny<br>Is the most pleasant and delightfull Town of the Kingdom of Ireland belonging to the noble prince James Duke Marquis and Earle of Ormond Earle of Ossory & Brecknock &c. Chancellor of the Universities of Oxford & Dublin, Lord Lieut<sup>t</sup> Generall and Generall Governor under his most sacred Ma<sup>tie</sup> of the Kingdom of IRELAND whose other titles see pag. <br>The Device of his family is COMME IE TROUVE. <br>His Paternall chiefe seat is y<sup>e</sup> Castle of Kilkenny which I have design’d on the other side, Famous for spacious Roomes, Galleries Halls, adorn’d with paintings of great Masters <br>Bowling green, Gardens Walks Orchards & a delightfull Waterhouse adjoining to the B Green, which with an Engine of curious artifice by the help of one horse furnisheth all the Offices of the Castle with that necessary Element. This Waterhouse hath a pleasant summer banquetting room, floor’d and lin’d with white & black marble which abounds here, with a painted skye roof w<sup>th</sup> Angells, in this is seen a fountaine of black marble in the shape of a large cup, with a ject d’eau or throw of water in the middle ariseing, mounts into the hollow of a Ducall Crown, which but hangs over it, and descends again at severall droping places round this I have touch’d off on the other side the following leaf.
