| On sort du parc [de Castletown House] par une grille et l’on tourne à droite pour aller à Cartown. Si l’on allait tout droit on retrouverait la Liffey et un très joli pays, allant vers Clain [Clane]. —La route que nous prîmes conduit si l’on veut à Maynooth, mais à la première fourche qu’on rencontre, où il y a un bras d’indication, on prend la route à droite. On passe à une portée de fusil de l’obélisque dessiné ici à côté, qui fait face au château de Cartown. Le duc a 18000£ de revenu, mais 60,000 acres de terre qu’au renouvellement des baux il pourra louer.<sup>#</sup> On se trouve ensuite à une porte du parc de Cartown qui s’ouvre avec la même politesse, et en traversant le parc, passant à quelque distance de la maison, on suit une longue avenue bien plantée qui aboutit au joli village neuf et riant que le Duc actuel a bâti à Maynooth. <br><sup>#</sup> Le « lawn » est très beau, très décoré, et on a pour point de vue autour les montagnes bleues du Comté de Wiklow, qui de là tournent au Sud. <br>[...] <br>[f. 5v] La maison du duc (Carton House) est d’un moins bon goût que Castletown, à qui d’ailleurs elle ressemble beaucoup. Quant au parc, il n’est presque pas orné et ressemble assez à celui du Phœnix. Sur une hauteur à gauche de la maison est une vieille tour qui fait ornement et d’où on a une vue fort étendue. Un ruisseau qui arrose une vallée peu profonde a été élargi et forme une rivière dans le goût de celle de Hyde Park. On la passe pour arriver au chateau sur un très beau pont. If one went straight on, one would come to the Liffey again and to a very pretty area, on the way to Clane. — The road we took can bring you to Maynooth, if you wish, but at the first fork with a signpost which one encounters one takes the right-hand road. One passes within a musket-shot of the obelisk (sketched here on the opposite page) facing Carton House. The Duke has £18,000 a year, but 60,000 acres of land, which he could let when the leases are up.<su>#</sup> One then finds oneself at one of the entrances to Carton park, which is opened with the same politeness, and crossing the park, at some distance from the house, one follows a long well planted avenue which leads to the pretty, charming new village which the present Duke has built in Maynooth.<br><su>#</sup> The lawn is very handsome, very ornamental, and affords a panoramic view of the blue mountains of County Wicklow which lie to the south. <br>[...] <br>[f. 5v] The Duke’s residence, Carton House, is not in such good taste as Castletown, which, moreover, it greatly ressembles. As for the park, it has few embellishments and is quite like the Phoenix Park. On a height to the left of the house is an ornamental tower from which one can see a great distance.
