| Biographical Notes | Religious journalist and writer, born Co. Tipperary, Ireland, son of merchant, Loftus Otway. He attended Trinity College Dublin and was subsequently ordained as a minister. He was appointed to the chaplaincy of Leeson Street Magdalen Chapel, Dublin in 1836. Co-founder of religious magazine the Christian Examiner with Joseph Henderson Singer in 1825. Otway published A Tour in Connaught (1839) and Sketches in Erris and Tyrawley (1841). He worked with painter and antiquary George Petrie on the first volume of the Dublin Penny Journal writing under the pseudonym Terence O’Toole. He was married twice, to Frances Hastings, daughter of the Very Reverend James Hastings, dean of Achonry, and subsequently to Elizabeth Digges La Touche, daughter of W. Digges La Touche of Sans Souci with whom he had four children, two sons and two daughters. He died in Dublin in 1842. |
