He contributed to journals in Scotland and London, and after Head Pieces and Tail Pieces, by a Travelling Artist (1820) wrote several travel-related books and novels. In the early 1830s he lived for a time in Normandy. He was commissioned by the engraver Charles Heath to write two series of illustrated travel books, Turner's Annual Tour (1833-35) and Heath's Picturesque Annual (1832-45). In connection with these he travelled extensively, supplying the letterpress for twelve volumes, including Ireland Picturesque and Romantic (2 vols, 1837-38). In 1837 he also wrote A Bystander's View of the Irish Poor Law Question.
